Pay careful attention to the “Argument” presented at the beginning of the poem. Read it a few times, even. It will help you become familiar with the story
1. What motivates Tarquin to rape Lucrece?
2. What words, do you notice, are used to describe Tarquin? Lucrece? What adjectives? What adverbs describe their actions? What metaphors or other figures of speech?
3. What arguments does Lucrece use to try to convince Tarquin not to rape her? Why do you think they don’t work?
4. Can you point to a line in the poem where you think the rape actually occurs? Why do you think Shakespeare makes this moment ambiguous?
